About the Niagara CAER Group

This website exists to educate the public about the activities of the Niagara CAER Group Chemical Manufacturing firms in the Niagara Region. CAER® is a registered trade mark of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) and stands for Community Awareness and Emergency Response.

What does Niagara CAER Group do?

Member companies participate in the following activities in the Niagara region:

  1. Community Outreach Activities:
    • Chemical Plant Open Houses
    • High School Tours of the Plants
    • Community Environmental Activities
    • Publicizing Plant Chemical Emissions Data
    • Risk Communication - What risks the Chemical Plants pose to the community
    • Chemical Plant Tours: Tours of a specific plant may be arranged by submitting a request by e-mail to pcollee@cogeco.ca including the name of the group, the reasons for the tour and if there are specific areas of interest.
  2. Emergency Planning Activities include:
    • Ensure that Plant Emergency Response procedures are in place & current
    • Conduct Emergency Exercises in conjunction with Fire, Police, Ambulance, & Hospital services at a minimum once every 5 years.
    • Maintain Transportation Emergency Response Teams in the event of chemical transportation emergencies such as spills

Responsible Care

While only Cytec Canada And Chemtrade Logistics are members of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) all members of the Niagara CAER Group are committed to operating according to the Responsible Care Codes of Practice.


Responsible Care Codes of Practice are summarized as follows:

Community Awareness and Emergency Response ( CAER ) Code : Through outreach to the public, CAER aims for an informed public regarding chemical manufacturing facilities and community emergency response plans which take into account the presence of chemical facilities in the community.


Manufacturing Code: To ensure plants are operated safely to protect employees, the public and the environment, and to ensure that the public knows this.

Hazardous Waste Management: This code advocates sound environmental practices in handling wastes to eliminate any adverse impact on the environment

Transportation: This code focuses on the prevention of transportation incidents and effective response to those that do occur.

Distribution: This code ensures that chemicals are handled safely when they are sold.

Research & Development: This code sets out guidelines for safety, health, & the preservation of the environment for all Research & Development.
